Axe Throwing Rules

Axe Throwing Venue in Ottawa
In all axe throwing venues in Ottawa there are several lanes. There are also several rooms so it does not feel very crowded.

Axe throwing is a sport in which the competitor throws an axe at a target, attempting to hit as close as possible to a bullseye. There are different organizations that regulate the rules and scoring of axe throwing, such as the World Axe Throwing League (WATL) and the National Axe Throwing Federation (NATF). Here are some of the basic rules of axe throwing that are common to most venues and events:

  • You must throw the axe with one or two hands so that the blade faces the target before release. You cannot throw the axe sideways, underhand, or with any other trick shots.
  • You must remain entirely behind the throwing line until the thrown axe comes to a stop. Crossing the line before the target is hit will result in a zero score for that throw.
  • You must retrieve your axe only when both axes have hit the target or the floor. You cannot retrieve your axe while another thrower is still throwing or while someone is in front of the 12-foot marker.
  • You must use the axes provided by the venue or approved by the official. You cannot bring your own axe or modify the axes in any way.
  • You must follow the safety regulations and instructions of the staff and officials at all times. You cannot throw an axe when there is a person or a live object in between or in front of you.

The scoring system may vary depending on the organization, but generally, each ring on the target is worth progressively more points, with the bullseye being worth six points.

There are also two small dots on the outer ring called killshots, which are worth eight points, but can only be attempted on certain throws.

A standard game consists of ten throws, followed by tiebreakers if needed. The winner is the one with the highest number of points after all throws are completed.
