When you think about Canada, your mind probably goes to the same place as mine does: snow, mountains, and all sorts of breathtaking views. However, Canada also has a few places with quite tropical views – and one of my favorites is Tofino. With its stunning beaches, lush forests, and world-renowned surfing, this place is the perfect destination for a thrilling Tofino adventure.

With mountains on one side and the ocean on the other side, Tofino gives you the best of every possible world. No matter if you like to walk, hike, swim, visit, or go pub crawling, this place has a lot of places for you to visit. Here is my guide on how to have the best adventure.

Activities for your Tofino Adventure

Tofino has plenty of opportunities for you to stay active. Here are the most popular activities you can engage in.

1.     Swimming

There are so many beaches in Tofino that you won’t ever run out of places to swim in. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing day by the shore or a thrilling Tofino adventure, there’s a beach for everyone, including beaches in Tofino such as Cox Bay Beach, Chesterman Beach, Torquin Beach, and Long Beach – if we were to count the more popular ones. And believe me, there are plenty of other beaches where those came from.

Personally, I’m a fan of the more secluded beaches such as Florencia Beach, Third Beach, or Rosie Bay Beach, which are also great options for beaches in Tofino. I would only recommend you go here if you are a good swimmer. The waters are usually calm, but there aren’t as many people around – and therefore, you can’t count on too many lifeguards.

2.    Whale Watching

Tofino has a lot of ocean around it, so to speak. So naturally, plenty of whales come close to the shore. Indeed, they won’t come all the way down to the beach to greet you, which is why you may want to go on a whale-watching tour. Almost every tourism-related business or beach manager offers these tours, so you may want to ask around.

Grey whales are the most frequently seen, but you may also see humpback whales and orcas. Depending on the tour operator, you may get to do the tour on a bigger, covered boat or a smaller, Zodiac-style boat.

3.    Surfing

Surfing is definitely one of the people’s favourite activity. Surfing in Tofino is particularly popular at Chesterman Beach and Long Beach because visitors say they have the best waves. However, if you are a beginner, you may want to try surfing in Tofino at Cox Bay or Pacific Sands instead, as they offer smoother waves and plenty of learning opportunities for a thrilling Tofino adventure.

If you are planning on surfing in Tofino during the off-season, it’s important to bring a wetsuit for warmth in the chilly waters. Summer months is the best time to visit, with July and August being the most popular ones for catching waves. And if you’re a beginner at surfing in Tofino, don’t worry – there are plenty of opportunities to catch waves or practice whitewashing in the shallower waters.

4.    Kayaking

Kayaking is also a must-do activity that should be on your itinerary. Clayoquot Sound is the most popular choice due to its scenic opportunities, but there are plenty of other places you can explore. Meares Island is often a hot spot for kayaking tours, which you can book if you are a beginner looking for a thrilling adventure.

5.    Deep-Sea Fishing

Tofino is a great option for a deep-sea fishing adventure in Canada. Depending on the fishing spot that you choose, you can catch some halibut, salmon, or lingcod. I recommend taking a full day with the town outfitters if you want to catch something efficiently. Fish also bite best in summer, between June and September, so make sure you properly schedule your fishing trip for an awesome experience.

Places to Visit in Tofino

Tofino has numerous places where you can satisfy your need for arts, culture, and entertainment, but it’s also a great place for an adventure. Here are the most popular attractions that people usually stop by during a trip..

1.     Eagle Aerie Gallery

The Eagle Aerie Gallery is the perfect place to go if you have an artist’s soul. Easily accessible on the main road that goes straight through Tofino, this gallery contains all of the works of Roy Henry Vickers, a popular Canadian artist. I find its location quite convenient because I can stop at it right between visiting spots.

Vickers is well-known for the fact that he created limited-edition prints, each with a unique and colourful theme. The gallery is open every day between 10 AM and 5 PM, giving you plenty of time to stop and visit.

2.    Carving Shed at Wickaninnish Inn

If you want to see a touch of Tofino heritage and have a unique adventure, then locals usually recommend you head out to the Carving Shed at Wickaninnish Inn. Found on the northern side of Chesterman beach, this tiny shed has been a Tofino landmark for more than 30 years. Most of the Tofino fine carving actually originates from this place.

The shed was first owned by Henry Nolla, which used it as a residence. He was the main carver at the shop, teaching various generations of young carvers to follow in the trade. He also carved the majority of architectural details at the Wickaninnish Inn.

3.    Tofino Botanical Gardens

If you like being surrounded by flowers and their glorious scents, then you should visit the Tofino Botanical Gardens. This place combines art and nature in a beautiful garden. Various trails lead to the forest area, some of which offer a gorgeous view of the coast.

Tofino Botanical Gardens has its educational points. For example, in a small section within the garden, you will come across a memorial of the earthquake and tsunami that took place in Japan in 2011. If you visit this section, you can see a variety of items that the tsunami washed up down the coast. Tofino Botanical Gardens offers visitors the opportunity to learn about this tragic event and its impact on the local and global communities.

4.    Radar Hill

Those who love a good view might consider a quick hike to Radar Hill. The hill got its name because back in the 50s, during the Cold War, it was used as a radio station. There’s not much left from the station today, aside from some parts of the foundation, but it still has a pretty view.

From the top of the hill, you get a great panorama of both the mountains and the ocean, making it a must-visit spot during your Tofino adventure. It’s a good spot to go if you’re like me and can’t make up your mind about what scenery you want to see (“both” is the answer). If you don’t like to hike, you can also drive to the top – which is also a town meeting spot should a tsunami ever happen.

5.    Florencia Bay Trail

In my experience, no trip is ever complete without doing at least one hiking trail through nature. Starting at Willowbrae Road, the trail takes about two hours and a half, going through forested regions of Tofino.

For a more secluded adventure, head to the end of the trail and explore Florencia Beach, which is known for its stunning sunsets and peaceful ocean views. Locals recommend you visit it late in the afternoon as it’s stunning during sunset. Personally, while I do enjoy the more popular beaches in Tofino, I don’t like that they are always very crowded. This beach is like a breath of air when I just want to enjoy some ocean tranquillity.

Where to Eat in Tofino

After a long day, the last thing I want to do is spend hours in the kitchen – one I may not even have. So, here are some places where you can experience some of the best cuisines in Tofino.

1.     Tacofino Truck

Sometimes, I don’t have time to grab a full meal, especially during lunchtime. I prefer to get something on the go until I reach the next attraction. The Tacofino truck is a go-to among locals, and obviously, tourists love it as well. The truck is fairly eccentric-looking, so you can’t really miss it when you pass by it. There are several truck locations across Tofino, so you don’t have to travel around a lot for them. The burritos and tacos are among the best I had!

2.    Chocolate Tofino

I don’t know about you, but when I visit a place and keep my itinerary busy, I like to stop by someplace to satisfy my sweet tooth. People are always talking about the gelatos and chocolate treats at Chocolate Tofino and decided to give it a go. Their Salted Caramel Sundae gelato was delicious! But there are plenty of other aromas to try depending on your preferences.

3.    Pointe Restaurant

I love some fancy dining now and again, and I came across the Pointe Restaurant at the Wickaninnish Inn. It’s a restaurant at the cliff top; it can’t get any better than that. The views are stellar, and the prices are decent, considering that it’s a fancy restaurant. If you want to tone it down, locals also recommend Driftwood Café, as it’s run by the same people that have the restaurant.

4.    The Wolf in the Fog

The Wolf in the Fog can be found in downtown Tofino and is a great choice for those wanting to enjoy a nice dinner. I love the view it has over Vancouver Island, and the seafood dishes were absolutely delicious.

5.    Shelter

Shelter is a great place to go, no matter if you want a fancy dinner or a quick bite. You can expect to see a lot of seafood on their menu, but visitors also say the burgers are delicious. The portions are big enough to share, and the fire pits on the patio make it a cosy winter meal destination.

6.    Big Daddy’s Fish Fry

Sometimes, I like to swap fancy dinners for some good old fish & chips. Big Daddy’s Fish Fry was right up my alley. The burgers and seafood were great, and the ice cream is perfect on a hot day. Some visitors also say that you can take the food to go and have it on the beach for an authentic experience.

Where to Stay in Tofino

There are numerous options where you can choose to stay, regardless of your budget. Two nights in Tofino are enough, but I guarantee you will want to stay longer. Whether you want something affordable or wish to stay at an all-inclusive resort, here are some popular choices:

1.     Long Beach Lodge Resort

The Long Beach Lodge Resort is a great option if you want more privacy. You can get a cottage that connects you to Long Beach. If you are coming with your loved one, I think this would make the best romantic getaway. A tip from previous clients: the lodge rooms are less expensive than the cottages if you wish to save a bit on the budget.

2.    Pacific Sands Beach Resort

Pacific Sands Beach Resort is one of the most popular luxury resorts in Tofino. You’ll have to pay a higher price for it, but considering the amenities it provides, I think it’s just fair. The resort is all-inclusive, so whether you want access to a good beach or surfing lessons, it can connect you with everything. I also like the fact that, despite it being so luxurious, the units have a rustic feel to them. It’s very relaxing to stay there, according to its visitors.

3.    Cox Bay Beach Resort

Cox Bay Beach Resort may be a middle-range option, but according to visitors and locals alike, this one has the best beaches you could go for. They are clean and well-maintained, and the view of the ocean is spectacular. The resort itself is on the beach, so you can easily get a room with an ocean view. Moreover, if you don’t like to stay in fussy ocean waves, you can choose to spend your day in the hot tub.

4.    Middle Beach Lodge

Middle Beach Lodge is situated on the beach, and you may book various types of rooms and cabins. The view of the ocean is gorgeous, with the quiet beaches allowing you to relax. Prices are also great, considering the offerings.

5.    Ocean Village Beach Resort

If you don’t like other people minding your business, I suggest you go to Ocean Village beach resort. It’s the perfect choice for vacationers that wish to self-cater. The cabins are all fully equipped, allowing you to go about your routine.

6.    Jamie’s Rainforest Inn

This inn is right outside of Tofino, but it’s very affordable and quite close to Cox Bay, Mackenzie, and Chesterman beaches. Plus, since you are surrounded by rainforest, it’s the most relaxing place to be, according to previous users.

7.    Himwitsa Lodge

Found in downtown Tofino, this lodge has a great view of Clayoquot Sound. Himwitsa Lodge is also one of the very few accommodations that include a hot tub. Personally, I love to soak a bit after a long day of visiting.

The Bottom Line

Tofino is a perfect destination for adventure seekers who love to explore the outdoors. With its beautiful rainforests and numerous beaches, it offers plenty of opportunities for Tofino adventure. You can hike, you can swim, you can watch the whales, and you can relax surrounded by rainforest. It has a little bit of everything for everyone, and that’s why I love it so much!
